Lithuania ADOPTION

Carolina Hope’s Lithuania adoption program is a good option for families who wish to adopt toddler-age plus, particularly sibling groups, and who can be somewhat patient.

What are advantages to the Lithuania program?

One advantage is the somewhat lower cost and, in some instances, it can be about as fast as a Russian adoption.

Who is eligible to adopt from Lithuania?

Married couples and single women between 25-50 yrs of age are eligible.

Generally speaking, the adoption ministry in Lithuania prefers that the adoptive parent be at least 18 years older than the child being adopted. Additionally, they should be no more than 45 yrs old than the child. For example, a 50-year-old parent should be able to adopt a 5-year-old plus. The Ministry prefers no more than 1 divorce per parent, no significant criminal background and no chemical dependencies (tobacco accepted). There doesn’t seem to be a specification RE: the number of children in the home.

Special note for single women: they are eligible only for a child 10 yrs old plus or possibly a younger child with health concerns.

What type of children are available in Lithuania?

Children available for adoption in Lithuania generally are 2 years old plus. There are more boys than girls and more older children. This is a good program for those wishing to adopt older children and sibling groups. Special needs children are also available.

How long will I wait for a referral from Lithuania?

The wait for a referral depends primarily on the age/sex of child being requested.

*girls, no known medical issues, 2-3 yrs of age—app. 2 years
*boys, no known medical issues, 2-3 years of age—app. 18 months
*children 4 yrs old up, app. 1 year
*sibling group, 4 yrs old up, app. 15-18 months
*sibling group

NOTE: the wait time commences from when your apostiled dossier documents are submitted to the Lithuanian adoption authorities.

What information do I receive at referral?

Usually you will receive a one page medical report and photo. Carolina Hope recommends that you take this information to one of the medical doctors who specialize in international adoption medicine (we can give you this info) for their review. Lithuania allows three turndowns of referrals and after that, if an additional referral is declined, they will no longer work with a family—this is Lithuanian policy, not that of Carolina Hope.

How long will I wait to travel?

You can generally expect to travel on trip #1 1-2 months after your referral acceptance. Both parents will travel on trip #1 for approximately 4-5 days. You will attend court to finalize the adoption. There is a 40-day waiting period between trips—at the end of the 40 days one or both parents will return to Lithuania to pick their child up and return home. The child’s visa is obtained at the US Embassy in Warsaw, Poland. Trip #2 is about 7 days as well. Families traveling will have full in-country support.

How much does the Lithuanian program cost?

The fees for one child are $12,500. Fees for additional children beyond one, adopted at the same time, are $4,100 each. Additional fees to consider: BCIS fees, homestudy, dossier fees, travel, postage, long-distance phone calls, etc. All fees are non-binding, good-faith estimates.
